The 5 W’s of Management – What, Where, When, Why and Who

Administration is a common term and is widespread. That is essential in any type of organization.

Supervision is basically ensuring merging efforts of available resources towards required objectives/ goals/targets.

Management is an activity of purpose. This can be a process and not an event or happening.

Management generally has to create an permitting situation. Required things or results need to be made to happen. Administration cannot wait for things or results to happen. It cannot give reasons or situations that averted required comes from going on. In fact, good management is one which foresees all possible constraints and plans strategic actions to work around them to achieve targeted objectives. Managing depending on situations and individuals can be a Process, Activity, Discipline, Group, Science, Art or Job and explained below:

“Management is a process that defines a sequence for a collection of planned activities to utilise available resources suitably, effectively and economically to achieve required results at the right time”. Managing can certainly be a social process since it generally bargains with humans in enabling them to plan, organize and perform activities that produce required results in a timely manner. It is also an integrating process since it integrates various resources like humans, financial, machinery, equipments and materials to produce required outcome. Finally, Management is a consistent process and should go on looking for newer targets/objectives and results when current ones are achieved. Managing cannot be considered to be over but goes on so in retrospect is exactly defined as a treatment. 

As an activity, management can be informational, decision-making or inter-personal. Management can never be achieved without movement of information between included resources. Once information moves decision should be taken in any other case nothing moves forward toward completion. Lastly, good management is characterised when i say good person-management skills that gets everyone included, motivated yet willing to give one’s best contentedly.

As a discipline, management pertains to study of principles & practices of basic administration. It identifies options for its practitioners to manage almost any organization. Supervision is formally taught leading to diploma/degree/masters globally in institutes and universities boosting a person competency and thereby one’s employability at higher levels of responsibility.

There are family owned businesses which may have the family members at the helm and define as Patrimonial or Family members Manager. Those with formal qualification a manager are known as Professional Professionals. Heads of political functions and government-owned enterprises/corporations/undertakings are Political Managers.

Management is accepted as both, an art and a scientific research. Management has well searched and documented knowledge and has proven examples to verify its applicability to day-to-day life and hence is undoubtedly a technology. Not everyone can be a successful and traditional manager. People have that skill, finesse, satisfactory knowledge and a private style that makes management a skill.

Administration practitioners are usually classified in to Top level, Middle level and Prominent line Managers globally across organizations. Top level Administration usually frames the targets, policies, strategies and redirects others towards achievement. Middle section level executes the top level’s plans and directions whereas front line operators actually get the job done.

Objectives of Supervision are generally regarded as optimising results, efficiency and rewards. Improving of individual life and social living standards and making everyone goal and achievement focused.

Management functions, as described by KOONTZ and O’DONNEL are widely accepted and are considered as Arranging, Organizing, Staffing, Directing and Controlling.

Another globally accepted management fundamental will be the 18 Principles of Management described by Frenchman Henri Fayol. The important ones between them are Division of Labor, Principle of A single Boss, Unity of Path, Equity, Order, Discipline, Effort, Fair Remuneration, Stability of Tenure and Sub-Ordination of Individual Interest to Basic Interest.
